This is Africa, our Africa
Thanks to for-profit prisons, Louisiana now has the highest incarceration rate in the world.
1 out of 86 people in Louisiana are behind bars, twice the national average.
The majority of the arrests are for non-violent, drug related charges or for violating probation/parole supervision. Blacks, of course, are disproportionately incarcerated.
The privatized system makes it profitably to not reduce crime (which means it’s less profitable to… say for instance… invest in children’s education). It appears to me that many of the stats on Louisiana are pretty disgusting.
